The research project

Many digital public goods (DPGs) are created and adopted to address challenges low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) face. To ensure the sustainability of DPGs, we must therefore understand the developer communities, priorities and capacities of OSS in the social sector in LMICs. Building on last year’s report and developed in partnership with Gina Assaf of Olive Branch International Digital Solutions, our Tech for Social Good team is exploring these areas in our new research project. The project will also contribute insights and analysis to the ongoing implementation of the United Nations’ Secretary-General’s Roadmap for Digital Cooperation, particularly in the area of DPGs.

We need your help!

Your insights, connections, and perspectives are indispensable to this project. With your contributions and the resulting findings, we plan to create detailed profiles of the social sector OSS ecosystem in the following countries:

• India
• Kenya*
• Egypt
• Mexico

*This might be a regional look if, for example, it makes sense to focus on East Africa as a bloc rather than only Kenya as a country.

GitHub is the home for all developers, and we’re excited to expand our knowledge of OSS in the social sector in LMICs. Specifically, we’d love to hear from you on the following topics as they pertain to the four countries listed above.

OSS communities

• The capacity and interest of developers and tech communities in building and contributing to OSS in the social sector
• The organizations, companies, and communities involved in the social sector OSS ecosystem
• Thematic, topic, or cause areas around which social sector OSS communities are formed

DPGs

• Contribution to and usage of DPGs
• Thematic, topic or cause areas that drive the creation of DPGs or other OSS in the social sector

Nuestro segundo proyecto de investigación de software libre

Muchos bienes publicos digitales (BPDs) son creados y adaptados para confrontar desafíos para países de bajo o medio ingreso (PBMIs). Para asegurar la sostenibilidad de BPDs tenemos que entender las comunidades de desarrolladores, las prioridades y capacidades de Open Source Software (OSS) en el sector social de (PBMIs). Iterando sobre el reporte del año pasado y creando conexiones con Gina Assaf de Olive Branch International Digital Solutions, nuestro equipo de Tech for Social Good está explorando estas áreas en nuestro nuevo proyecto de investigación. El proyecto también contribuirá información y análisis para la implementación continua de la hoja de ruta del Secretario General de las Naciones Unidas para la cooperación digital, especialmente en el área de los BPDs.
