One Tree Planted
As part of Earth Day 2021, GitHub partnered with One Tree Planted to plant 20,000 trees across the world, including 6,000 trees in India, British Columbia, and Uganda. One Tree Planted projects span the globe and are completed in partnership with local communities and knowledgeable experts to create an impact for nature, people, and wildlife. According to the U.S. EPA, a single tree will absorb about .06 metric tons of carbon dioxide over a 10-year period as it grows. That means the trees planted by this initiative should remove approximately 1,200 metric tons of carbon dioxide over the next decade.

Green Software Foundation
GitHub, along with Microsoft, Thoughtworks, and Accenture, founded the Green Software Foundation in 2021. The vision of the foundation is to change the culture of building software across the tech industry so that sustainability becomes as much of a priority to software teams as performance, security, cost, and accessibility. The foundation has a goal to reduce emissions related to the information and communications technology industry by 45 percent by 2030.
